What types of connectors exist and what are they used for?

Modified on Wed, 3 Dec at 2:53 PM

EVs use different connectors such as Type 2 (AC) for regular charging, CCS (DC) for fast charging, and CHAdeMO for older fast chargers — each suited for a different charging type and speed.

Step-by-step plan

  • Always check which connector type your vehicle supports.
  • Some fast chargers require adapters

Additional information

  • Type 2 (Mennekes): For AC charging; the most common in Europe. Used for home charging, workplace charging, and public AC chargers.

  • CCS (Combined Charging System): For fast charging (DC) along highways and at public fast-charging stations.

  • CHAdeMO: An older fast-charging standard, mainly for Japanese EVs such as the Nissan Leaf. It is used less often today, but some fast chargers still support both standards.

  • Type 1 (SAE J1772): For older EVs from North America or certain Asian models.
